Matthew 1: God’s Original Plan Restored

A Bible Study for Women Who Desire a Deeper Relationship with God

Welcome to Faith and Favor Family Bible Study.

This is a space created for women who want to slow down, open the Bible, and truly understand God—not just learn about Him, but walk with Him. Here, we take Scripture one chapter at a time and allow God’s Word to speak to our lives today.

Today, we begin the New Testament with Matthew chapter 1.

At first glance, this chapter may seem like a long list of names. But when we pause and look closer, we discover something deeply personal: Matthew 1 is about God’s original plan for humanity—and His faithfulness to restore it.

Jesus Was Born With Purpose

Matthew 1 reminds us that Jesus was not born randomly. His birth was intentional, promised, and perfectly timed.

Through generations, covenants, and even human failure, God was working toward redemption. Jesus was born to restore our relationship with God and to bring us back to the place He intended from the very beginning—a place of closeness, purpose, and communication with Him.

Before we move forward, take a moment to pray. Ask God to open your heart and understanding as you study His Word.

Why Do Generations Matter to God?

According to Scripture (Genesis 5 and Genesis 11), there are 20 generations between Adam and Abraham.

From Adam to Noah — 10 generations

Adam, Seth, Enos, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah

From Noah to Abraham — 10 generations

Shem, Arphaxad, Salah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, Terah, Abraham

These generations reveal something powerful: God works through time, families, and people—even when they are unaware of it.

Every name mattered. Every generation served a purpose. And the same is true for you.

Going Back to the Beginning

Before fully understanding Matthew 1, it’s important to go back to the beginning.

In Genesis 1:26–29, God created mankind in His image. He desired relationships, communication, and partnership with humanity. Adam and Eve walked with God. God spoke directly to them.

But in Genesis 3, sin entered the world, and separation followed.

Later, in Matthew chapter 4, we see Satan attempt to tempt Jesus in the same way he tempted Adam and Eve. This time, however, Jesus did not fail. Where Adam fell, Jesus stood firm. Where humanity was separated, Jesus restored the connection.

This is why Jesus had to come.

Question 1: Why Does Matthew Begin With a Genealogy?

Matthew begins with a genealogy to show that Jesus did not arrive by accident.

This family line proves that Jesus:

  • Is connected to Adam, the first man
  • Comes through Abraham, the man of promise
  • Comes through, David, the king God chose

Jesus is the bridge between where humanity started and where God is bringing us back.

Question 2: What Was God’s Original Plan for Humanity?

God’s original plan was relationship.

Before sin:

  • God spoke directly to mankind
  • There was no separation
  • Humanity lived in purpose, peace, and identity

Jesus was born to restore that relationship. God still desires to walk with us, talk with us, and know us personally.

Question 3: Why Is Jesus Connected All the Way Back to Adam?

Because Jesus came to fix what was broken in Adam.

Adam represents the beginning of humanity.
Jesus represents the new beginning.

Matthew 1 reminds us that God never abandoned His original design—He redeemed it.

Question 4: What Do the Generations Teach Us About God?

They teach us that:

  • God works through imperfect people
  • God does not cancel His plan because of human failure
  • God’s promises outlast mistakes

There were generations of faithfulness, generations of brokenness, and generations that seemed forgotten—but God stayed faithful through them all.

God is patient.
God is intentional.
God keeps His Word.

Question 5: Why Does God Care About Lineage and Timing?

Because God is a God of order and purpose.

Every generation in Matthew 1 served a role—even when they didn’t see it. This tells us something important:

Your life matters, even when you don’t see the full picture.

God placed you in this generation on purpose.

Question 6: What Does Jesus’ Birth Mean for Us Today?

Jesus was born to bring us back:

  • Back to relationship with God
  • Back to purpose
  • Back to identity
  • Back to communication with our Creator

God still wants to speak to us today—through prayer, His Word, and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus didn’t just come to save us from sin.
He came to restore us to God.

Question 7: What Is the Main Message of Matthew 1?

The message is simple and powerful:

God never changed His mind about humanity.

Even after sin.
Even after failure.
Even after generations passed.

Jesus was born to fulfill God’s original plan—to have a people who know Him, walk with Him, and live in purpose.

Final Encouragement

Jesus was not born by accident, and neither were you.

God is intentional with generations, with timing, and with people. Through Jesus, we are invited back into a place of connection, purpose, and identity. The same God who spoke to Adam desires to speak to you today.

As you move forward this week, listen for His voice, trust His plan, and remember—you are part of something far greater than you can see.

Stay encouraged. Stay rooted in the Word.
And continue this journey through Matthew—one chapter at a time.

Blessings to you, and peace from God.
